When selecting a meter pedestal for commercial or utility-scale applications, one critical consideration is whether to use a ring or ringless meter socket. Each configuration has distinct advantages, installation requirements, and compatibility standards driven by utility company preferences and regional regulations. Understanding the differences between ring and ringless meter designs is essential for specifiers and engineers seeking reliable, code-compliant power distribution solutions.

Commercial service pedestals are built to handle the large electrical load of entire housing developments or industrial parks. They can also be used to measure the electrical consumption of a complex sprinkler system or EV charging station. Each case requires a unique electrical configuration that is decided upon by the utility delivering the power.

Ring-style meter sockets are a secure method for mounting electric utility meters. These sockets feature a metal retention ring that locks the meter into place and is sealed by the utility to prevent tampering. Known for their durability and tamper resistance, ring-style meters are often required by utilities in parts of the United States and Canada, particularly in the western regions. Although they involve a slightly more complex installation process compared to ringless alternatives, their robust design and added security make them a reliable choice for long-term service connections.

Ringless-style meter pedestals are electrical enclosures designed to house utility meters without the use of a sealing ring to secure the meter in place. These pedestals allow utility personnel easier access to the meter for installation, service, and maintenance. The ringless design features a lever bypass or other securing mechanism that simplifies the metering process and reduces service time. Ringless pedestals can be preferred by utilities due to their efficiency and compatibility with smart meters. Eastern regions of the United States and Canda often prefer this style of meter.

Choosing the correct ring type often comes down to what the utilities specify in that region, however sometimes they will allow both styles. Knowing the key difference between the two types can help when deciding for the enclosure application.

StrongBox manufactures multiple styles of NEMA 3R rated stainless steel meter pedestals, that can be configured as Ring or Ringless style. Our service pedestals can accommodate a wide range of electrical configurations and are ideal for applications across the United States. StrongBox service pedestals are equipped with water shedding drainage channels and padlock provisions to ensure a watertight and vandal resistant enclosure.

Metered Pedestal (MPS)

The MPS service pedestal was designed to handle a wide range of applications from street lighting to irrigation controls. The swing side top allows for full exposure of the meter compartment and ample room for testing and maintenance. Separate landing lug and customer compartments offer space for auxiliary components and up to 26 circuit breakers. This EUSERC 308 compliant pedestal can be paired with our SB-1852 enclosure to additional storage space and battery backup systems.

Commercial Service Pedestal (CSP)

StrongBox’s CSP is the ideal solution for transportation and lower voltage applications. The compact footprint of the CSP packs a big punch with separate utility, customer and landing lug compartments and allowances for up to 16 circuit breakers. The swing side top locks open for safety and include provisions for a pad lock. This pedestal is EUSERC 308, Caltrans Type III-BF, and Caltrans Spec ES-2E compliant.

XL Single Service Pedestal (SSP)

The SSP Meter pedestals provide ample room for complex wiring, higher voltage components, up to 480v, and easier utility maintenance. Due to its extra-large capacity, the SSP can be populated with any StrongBox single meter pedestal offering – Including the MPS and CSP configurations. This pedestal is EUSERC 308 and Caltrans III-BF compliant.

*EUSERC 308 Compliance does not include Ringless configurations.
